Egypt’s food exports have reached $5.5 billion in the first eleven months of 2024, reflecting a 17% year-on-year increase, according to a statement released by the Food Export Council on December 31.
This surge represents an $813 million increase from the $4.7 billion recorded during the January-November period of 2023, marking a record growth in recent years and positioning Egypt as an emerging force in the global food trade.
Arab nations continue to lead as key importers
Arab countries continue to be the largest importers of Egyptian food products, making up 53% of Egypt’s total food exports, valued at $2.94 billion—a 15% increase from 2023. Saudi Arabia and Sudan are the top two importers, with imports totaling $434 million and $363 million, respectively, reinforcing their positions as key players in Egypt’s food export network.
US, EU markets see strong growth
The United States saw an impressive 40% growth in food exports from Egypt, reaching a value of $302 million in the January-November period of 2024, highlighting significant expansion into North American markets.
In the European Union (EU), Egypt’s food exports reached $1.08 billion in the first eleven months of 2024, accounting for 20% of total food exports and showing a strong 33% year-over-year growth. Non-Arab African countries also saw significant growth, importing $464 million in food products, which represents 8% of Egypt’s total food exports and a 7% increase compared to 2023.
Key export categories
Among Egypt’s food export categories, carbonated beverage concentrates led the way with exports valued at $502 million, reflecting a modest 5% growth compared to 2023. In addition, the frozen potato segment experienced remarkable growth, soaring by 904% to reach $204 million—highlighting shifting global consumption patterns and rising demand for convenience foods.
While the overall outlook is positive, not all sectors have seen growth. The sugar export category faced a 21% decline in 2024, partly due to an ongoing domestic sugar shortage. To stabilize the local market and keep consumer prices in check, the Egyptian government supplied 245,000 tons of sugar.
FEC targets $7.7B in food exports by 2027
Looking ahead, Egypt’s food export sector is poised for continued growth. The new cabinet program, which was launched in July, aims to boost merchandise exports by 15% annually. Hani Berzi, Chairman of the Food Export Council (FEC), has outlined ambitious targets, aiming for a composite annual growth rate of 15%. The FEC aimed for $6 billion in food exports by the end of 2024, with a long-term goal of reaching $7.7 billion by 2027.
With strong regional demand, expansion into new international markets, and a focus on high-growth categories, Egypt’s food export sector is well-positioned for success in the years ahead. This growth highlights Egypt’s rising influence in global trade and the growing potential of its agricultural and food production industries, noted the statement.
